Creator Joseph Pilates came up with both mat exercises, as well as work for special apparatus which he designed and built, namely the Pilates Reformer, which is the most common piece of equipment used in Pilates studio settings.

The GYROTONIC® method of exercise is a mind-body exercise system created by Juliu Horvath, a former professional ballet dancer.  The methodology was inspired by similar principles found in the practice of dance, yoga, Pilates, swimming, and tai chi.  Like Joseph Pilates, Juliu also designed and built specialized equipment for use with his exercises.
